U.S. Single-Family Housing Starts Dip, But Multi-Family Shows Strength

U.S. housing starts continued to slip in June, coming in at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.559 million, which was down 2% from May and down 6.3% from June 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development monthly new residential construction report.

Single-family starts were at a rate of 982,000 down 8.1% from May. However, multi-family starts (five units or more) made up some ground, reporting in at 568,000, representing a 15% increase over May.

U.S. housing building permits were at an annual rate of 1.685 million, down less than a percent from May. Single-family permits in June were rated at 967,000 down 8% from May; multi-family was 666,000, an increase of 13% over May.

U.S. housing completions were at a rate 1.365 million, down 4.6% from May. Single-family completions were rated at 996,000 in June, down 4.1% from May.

Housing starts were 1.601 million in 2021 and 1.379 million in 2020.
