U.S. Housing Starts Take Another Dip, Single-Family Declines For Fifth Straight Month

U.S. housing starts, both single-family and multi-family, took a hard hit in July, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development monthly new residential construction report.

Combined housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.446 million, down 9.6% from June; single-family starts were 916,000, down 10.1% from June; and multi-family (five units or more) were 514,000, down 10%.

Building permits fared somewhat better, with combined permits at 1.674 million in July, down 1.3% from June; single-family was at a rate of 928,000, 4.3% below June; and multi-family was 693,000, up 2.5% from June.

Housing completions were at a rate of 1.424 million, which was 1.1% above June; single-family completions were 1.009 million, down 0.8%; and multi-family was 412,000, up 6.7%.

U.S. single-family starts dropped for the fifth consecutive month.
