U.S. Housing Starts Hit A High Note
U.S. housing starts soared in March 2021, with both single-family and multi-family starts contributing to the boom, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development monthly new residential construction report.
Combined starts in March were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.739 million, a whopping 19.4% above February and 37% above March a year ago when the pandemic struck.
Single-family starts in March were at an annual rate of 1.238 million, 15.3% above February and nearly 41% above March 2020. Multi-family starts were 477,000 in March, a 30% jump over February and 27% above March 2020.
Housing starts had dipped in January and February, following four consecutive months of growth to round out 2020.
U.S. housing building permits were 1.766 million in March, 2.7% above February and 30.2% over March 2020. Single-family permits were 1.199 in March, 4.6% above February and 35.6% over March 2020.

Hoffman Companies Acquires Besse Forest Products Group
The Hoffmann Family of Companies (HFOC), a Florida-based family-owned private equity firm, has acquired Besse Forest Products Group, the longstanding Michigan-based family-run company with 10 manufacturing facilities, including four sawmills, a lumber drying concentration yard, four veneer mills and a cut-to-size plywood mill.

Walter Jarck, whose career in the forest products industry spanned 65 years and ranged from logging machinery to engineered wood products, died January 3, surrounded by his children, in North Wilkesboro, NC. He was 92.
