Single-Family Starts Dip, But Multi-Family Ticks Upward
U.S. housing starts (single-family and multi-family combined) came in at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.569 million in April, down 9.5% from March but 67% above April 2020 when the pandemic severely hit the housing construction market.
Single-family starts were 1.087 million in April, 13.4% below March and nearly 59% above April a year ago. Multi-family was 470,000 in April, up 4% from March and a whopping 98% above April a year ago.
Housing building permits were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.76 million in April, about the same as in March and 61% above April 2020. Single-family permits were 1.149 million in April, 3.8% below March. Multi-family permits in April were 559,000, 11% above March.
