Single-Family Housing Starts Go Up

According to the U.S. Census Bureau monthly new residential construction report, U.S. single-family housing starts continued their climb in August, reaching 1.021 million, a 4.1% increase over July and 12% above August a year ago. Multi-family starts, however, were at 375,000 in August, a 25% decline from July and a 17% drop from August 2019. Combined single-family and multi-family starts were 1.416 million in August, 5.1% below July and 2.8% above August 2019.

Largest percentage of single-family starts came in the West and Midwest at 23% and 20%, respectively.

Single-family building permits were 1.036 million, 6% above July and 15.6% above August 2019. Multi-housing permits for August were 381,000, 17% down from July and 29% down from August 2019. Single-family and multi-family permits combined for August were 1.47 million, a percent below July and about event with August 2019.

Single-family completions in August were 912,000 in August, down 4.4% from July.
