Housing Starts Gain Steam, Though Permits Show Slight Decline
U.S. housing starts experienced another month of growth in June 2021, reaching a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.643 million, a 6.3% increase over May and 29.1% above June 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development monthly new residential construction report.
Single-family starts were at a rate of 1.16 million, a 6.3% increase over May and 28.5% above June 2020. Multi-family rate in June was 474,000, a 6.8% increase over May and 30.6% above June 2020.
June 2020 represented the beginning of housing starts picking up momentum and coming out of the pandemic.
Housing building permits were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.598 million in June, down 5.1% from May and 23.3% above June 2020. Single-family permits were 1.063 million, 6.3% below May. Multi-family permits in June were 483,000, down 1.6% from May.
