Canfor Hosts Open House At New Alabama Sawmill

Canfor Southern Pine held an opening ceremony in early February at its new $210 million, 250MMBF annual production capacity southern yellow pine sawmill in Axis, Ala., about 20 miles north of Canfor’s existing sawmill in downtown Mobile.

Announced in July 2022, the mill is expected to employ 130 directly. BID Group (now Comact) subsequently announced it would partner with Canfor to deliver the state-of-the-art sawmill.

Vancouver, Can.-based Canfor said it woundd down the existing sawmill in Mobile—originally Gulf Lumber and then Scotch Gulf, before Canfor’s gradual purchase of Scotch Gulf beginning in 2013.
