Nevada’s Tahoe Forest Products Gets Major Upgrade

A key part of the region’s forest health management, Tahoe Forest Products in Carson City, Nev. paused operations in late 2025, though this past June began a major modernization project. The mill is getting a sawmill rebuild, plus is installing dry kilns and a planer mill. The mill, the first to open in Nevada in almost 100 years, started up in 2023. Backed by a variety of local and regional investors, including the Washoe Tribe that provided land for the mill site, the mill initially was processing burned salvage logs primarily from the 2021 Caldor Fire, but has since been working with logs from fuels reduction projects in the area.

Officials plan to restart the mill in 2027. According to a company statement, the modernization project is a $50 million investment in the facility. The mill initially went the used equipment route to get up and running quickly on the salvage logs, but company officials have since decided to invest in new equipment that could better handle the wide variety of logs coming from forest health projects in large and small diameters. Tahoe Forest Products was also recently awarded a 20-year Master Stewardship Contract by the U.S. Forest Service that covers multiple national forests in the region, solidifying its position as a major market for forest health projects and ensuring raw material supplies into the future.
