U.S. Housing Starts Rebound In February

U.S. housing starts brushed off a sluggish January and reached a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.45 million in February, up 9.8% over January. Single-family starts were 830,000, a percent above January, while multi-family (five units or more) were at 608,000, up a whopping 24% over January.

The uptick in February broke a four-consecutive monthly decline for the combined starts.

Building permits were at a rate of 1.524 million in February, nearly 14% above January. Single-family permits were 777,000, up 7.6%, and multi-family was 700,000, up 24.3%.

Housing completions were at a rate of 1.557 million in February, 12.2% above January, with single-family completions at 1.037 million, a percent above January, and multi-family completions at 509,000, a jump of 44.6% over January.

Robbins Lumber has listed its 100-acre sawmill complex in Hancock, Maine for sale with a price of $2.5 million. This site was acquired from Pleasant River Lumber in 2023 by Robbins. Included in the property sale are kilns, a planer mill, truck scale and a 42,000 sq. ft. sawmill with an attached machine shop. The property also includes a fully leased apartment building.

Roseburg Names Orozco To Direct Strategic Business

Roseburg has annouced that Nadine Orozco has been promoted to Director of Strategic Business Development. She has served as manager of strategic business development since 2022, and has been deeply involved in key company projects, including the recent sale of Roseburg’s Simsboro, La., particleboard plant to Kronospan and the company’s historic $700 million investment in Oregon manufacturing.

Hoffman Companies Acquires Besse Forest Products Group

The Hoffmann Family of Companies (HFOC), a Florida-based family-owned private equity firm, has acquired Besse Forest Products Group, the longstanding Michigan-based family-run company with 10 manufacturing facilities, including four sawmills, a lumber drying concentration yard, four veneer mills and a cut-to-size plywood mill.
