Story by Rich Donnell,
Editor-in-Chief

Last November in this space we informed you that Timber Processing had gone global, adding 1,200 sawmill owners, managers and other lumber industry professionals from outside of North America to our readership list. It has been an expensive endeavor—mailing costs, larger print run—but well worth it, and we continue to enhance our coverage of the international sawmill business and the technologies therein.

Late in May we are off to the Ligna show in Hannover, Germany, and will be promoting Timber Processing abroad along with two of our other publications, Wood Bioenergy and Panel World. We have for many years, since the late 1980s in fact, been attending Ligna and exhibiting our Panel World magazine. In the May issue of Panel World that we’re taking to Ligna, an astonishing 53 machinery and technology supplier companies participated in the issue with an advertisement and the submission of an article and photo about their exhibits and new products.

In this May issue of Timber Processing, an impressive 16 machinery and technology supplier companies have purchased an advertisement and submitted an article and photos on their Ligna exhibits. Of course, 16 isn’t 53, but we’re confident as we build Timber Processing’s international presence that in the near future 16 will turn into 53.
In this issue, those 16 companies and their Ligna products emphasis include:

  •  Brunner Hildebrand—dry kilns technology
  •  Bühler—hammermills
  •  Comact—vision technologies
  •  CombiLift—forklifts
  •  Dynalyse—lumber strength grading
  •  Esterer—green end sawing and optimization
  •  Linck—cutter heads and canters
  •  Limab—board measurement and profiling
  •  MiCrotec—scanning
  •  Söderhamn—debarking, chipping
  •  Springer—lumber handling, sorting
  •  TimberTec—operations software
  •  USNR—complete sawmill systems
  •  Wagner—moisture content controls
  •  Weinig—secondary processing
  •  Wintersteiger—thin-kerf saws

You’ll recognize some of these companies, and it’s a broad range of machinery and technologies that they bring to the table. If you can’t attend Ligna, go to our Ligna preview section beginning on page 13 and find more detail on these companies and their offerings, and also note their advertisements throughout the magazine.

The bottom line, of course, is that our effort to expand internationally will succeed only if we continue to bring in new international advertisers, who complement our long-standing, valuable domestic advertisers. The more information we can deliver to you, no matter where it comes from, the more informed you will be as you proceed with the betterment of your sawmill business.
