Weyerhaeuser Co. plans to build a sawmill and close one both in the area of Lebanon, Ore. The sawmill on Weirich Drive will permanently close and a new operation will be built at the existing Bauman lumber mill location on Fairview Road. Rob Taylor, Weyerhaeuser’s lumber technologies VP, says Weyerhaeuser will build a world-class sawmill.

About 50% of the ponderosa pine sawmill’s 42MMBF production is 5⁄4 and 6⁄4 shop grade lumber, all of which is marketed to major window manufacturers such as Pella, Anderson and Marvin to name a few.

New equipment in the sawmill and planer mill is paying off with less downtime, less log breakage and better recovery for L&M Lumber’s studs operation here. The following procedures and recommendations are in place at many mills and have proven that manual grading has been and can be successful to the tune of mid 90% on grade, with the percentage of No. 2 & better between 84-86%. I have first-hand experience being a head grader at two different mills with some or all of these procedures in place.
