An early morning fire destroyed a Maple Ridge cedar mill on Sunday, leaving up to 60 people without jobs and managers uncertain they can rebuild.

No one was injured in the fire at the Waldun Forest Products mill, which was reported by the lone night worker — a watchman — just after midnight Sunday.

The cause of the fire that engulfed the mill’s main production area and a nearby cedar chip pile is not known, said Mark Smitton, Maple Ridge assistant fire chief. Arson has not been ruled out, he said, although it is unlikely. An investigation continues.

Smitton said the cedar sawdust at the Maple Ridge mill is different than sawdust at pine mills, like the two northern B.C. sawmills that were destroyed by explosions earlier this year.
